Why magnesium is so important in sports?

In our everyday lives, we try to act like superheroes willing to do numberless important things throughout the day: we spend a lot of time working, we want to get maximum results while training, as well as to spend some quality time with family or friends.

It all sounds good, but there’s always a trap. In reality, the fact that we can achieve total harmony so effortlessly is just an illusion. A slight digression and our idyllic agenda fall apart.

And we are well aware that this happens every day. That’s the reality of the 21st century. And there’s a well-known demon that lies behind all this – stress.

Why magnesium is SO important in sports?

However, this post is not about the enormous damage it causes, nor about the ways of fighting it or any associated preventive measures. It’s about magnesium and its effects on the human body.

Stress and all its effects are related to one of the most important trace minerals, which is magnesium. You may ask why but I believe you already know the answer.

Magnesium helps to guarantee the proper functioning of the musculoskeletal system.

It is involved in energy production and is essential for maintaining a good bone structure. Moreover, magnesium is an antioxidant that helps to ensure a normal heart rate.

What is the connection between magnesium and stress?

  • When you find yourself in stressful situations, there’s a great risk of damaging your nervous system. Magnesium is the element that helps to normalize and strengthen the nervous system.
  • Very often, stress and the problems associated with it cause the multiplication or intensification of inflammatory processes in the human body, and magnesium helps to regulate it.
  • Stress can negatively affect nutrition. Unfortunately, it can lead to improper nutrition. If we don’t get enough nutrients we need, including magnesium, we lock ourselves in a no-frills chain. While getting fewer materials we need, we deepen our problems and become even more vulnerable.

Some signs of possible magnesium deficiency:

  • Difficulties falling asleep;
  • Endless inflammatory processes;
  • Constant fatigue;
  • Muscle strains;
  • Impaired body recovery after working out.

Magnesium deficiency can cause lower metabolism, increased oxygen consumption and higher than necessary heart rate. All these factors are taken into consideration when it comes to athletes’ performance.

We may not escape the demons of the 21st century, but we can control the situation. Let’s help our body with a balanced diet in the fight against stress! And don’t forget to take magnesium.
